Braelyn, Volume 11: November, 3, 2014

Hi! Apologies for a late blog posting. I was away at a conference learning how to best meet the needs of all our children:) Check below for the essentials.

Systems a Go!!!
We continue our study of human systems and how they work together to function as a whole and perform many tasks. Last week we measured the digestive system, learned about the circulatory and respiratory systems. As a follow-up, this Wednesday we will attend a field trip to our Tashkent International Clinic and see how different technologies help us systems at work - like heart monitors, ultrasound machines, x-rays, and more. Earlier this week, we dissected a fetal pig which was rather interesting. Students are really making connections between different functions of systems and how they affect the human body as a whole.

In Math we completed our unit in multiplication and division with our Friday assessment last week. Keep practicing math facts, single and double multiplication problems at home. We are showing our learning through student-created division and multiplication word problems as well. They include excellent descriptions of strategies. Encourage your child to share his/her thinking, as to how they solve problems. This can be about anything! Communication is of our understanding is key.

Student-Led Conferences
Want to know how your child is doing in school? Typically we rely on a teacher for this, but why not have the information come straight from the source- your child! This Friday 12:30-4:30 we have our Student-Led Conferences (if you do not know your time, please email me ASAP). Students are ready to share their learning, hard work, and growth since the start of the school year.

A Note about Recess
Recess is usually spent outside under supervision of the school faculty members. If weather does not permit students to play outside, we will hold recess indoors. We feel it is important for students to be outside as much as possible; unless it is extremely cold or raining, students are sent outside. If the student is well enough to attend school, it is the school policy that he/she should go outside for recess.  Students need to be dressed appropriately for recess. During the hot months, this involves a hat and sunscreen while during the colder months warm clothing is needed.

Elementary Winter Concert - parent help needed

Our annual Elementary Winter Concert will take place on the evening of December 16.  In previous years parent volunteers have helped Ms. Natalya teach the students songs from a variety of different cultures, and in many languages.  We would welcome your help again this year.  If you would like to teach a class a song in your mother tongue, please contact Natalya Khon (natalyak@tashschool.org ) stating the language of the song and the times within the school day you would be available.  We look forward to another wonderful winter concert that truly represents our international community.

Owl of the Week!
Hello! I am Braelyn Kien Dale and I live in Uzbekistan with mom, dad, and sister. What excites me most about school is Mr. Mike and activity school activities. My favorite thing to do outside of school is play the wii and travel to different countries. If I could change anything about the world, it would be have less pollution and nobody would be poor. Two people I admire are my grand-dads because they like to do stuff with me. My favorite dinners are Hutspot, pizza, chicken and rice, sandwiches, and beetroot salad. My least favorite dinner is couscous with brussel sprouts.
