Hand eye coordination related game.

This week students are playing simple tag “Pass & Score”. During this game students are challenged to apply throwing and catching, so they can score points. This game is combined with another throwing and dodging activity called “Swampball” that will help to develop hand eye coordination.

Na Yeon: Volume 17: December 15, 2014

This Wednesday, December 17 grade 4 is hosting their yearly assembly. Our theme is "Giving" and is inspired by the holiday season. As part of our work, students will create a "giving plan" for a random person in our community. They are to observe the other person for two days, create a giving plan, and follow-through with their giving plan. The idea is to focus on ways to give to others, rather than focus on receiving from others. To promote different ways of thinking, we watched this video. I would check it out!

Please remember to read your historical fiction novel over winter break. It is expected that presentations be ready when students return. For those students that miss their day due to break, we will work out a different time for them, so they have enough time to prepare.

Xiao Ya, Volume 16: December 8, 2014

We're rotting away! Haha!
We have carved a pumpkin and placed it in an enclosed glass case with soil. Using our Pumpkin Journals, we are following the scientific method to test what will happen. The culminating event will be a visit from the author of the story later this school year!

Data... it has many shapes and we represent it in so many different ways. This and next week we will continue to represent data using line plots, frequency tables, bar graphs, line graphs, and any other way students create. With this data, we will look for different patterns and averages, like the mean, median, mode, and range.

We just keep moving... as we study different map and geography skills that show the migrations of people we're reading about in UOI. This week we discussed needs and wants and how they can be different due to a situation a person may be in, like war or living in a first-world or third-world country. We will continue to explore migration books and eventually choose one to retell using Puppet Pals.

Book Clubs continue to improve as we learn how to debate and discuss our thoughts, ideas, and answers to challenging discussion questions. The Stone Fox book club group helped model how to take turns arguing and use the text to support their answers.

In writing, we will be discussing how to use dialogue and interview others. This links to our UOI study, as many migration stories are told orally and passed on from one generation to the next.

Action
Students are really reflecting and making many connections to their migration stories, people's stories around them, and in our books. When your child mentions how or why people, or family members move, this is Action because they want to know more about human migration and its connection(s) with challenges, risks, and opportunities related to this. Tell me about it, so I can add it to next week's blog! Thanks:)
