Volume 3: 26 August 2016

What? Isn't everyone a goat lover?
It was a pleasure meeting many of you this week for our grade level gathering and Open House. Each Friday, this blog should be updated for your weekend reading pleasure. You can discuss this week's learning, as well as get a look into what might happen next week. As mentioned during Open House, homework is posted here each week. Should you need anything, please email me.

This week has been a whirlwind! We are fully into our Unit of Inquiry, as we visited the Magnit Supermarket and will visit a bazaar next week. Focusing on distribution, or how different types of foods, are transported and stored has brought about interesting ideas. During class discussions, students discovered that keeping foods, such as fruits and vegetables, is difficult to keep fresh and cold (if needed). In some cases, some students saw for the first time how food is kept cool in supermarkets and how supermarkets buy things in bulk. Why they buy in bulk is yet to be determined! We wonder how the bazaar might compare and contrast to the supermarket, in terms of how food is bought, sold, and transported.

Our study of our base ten system continues. This week we completed an incomplete 300 hundred chart. Easy, you say? Well, we did it by using landmark numbers and jumping around - moving up and down and left and right. We challenged ourselves and used our mental math skills in the process. Next week, we continue our study, using mental math strategies during a new activity called 101-200 Bingo.

Our first writing piece will be published as well. We have reminded ourselves how great writers use a process to create an authentic piece of work. Students have worked hard on their drafts this week and will revise, to add details, and edit, for punctuation, and then publish next week. We look forward to celebrating the process that took us to our final published piece, rather than just focusing on the end piece.

Enjoy the week!

Homework: Along with reading 20 minutes each night, please complete the following...
Monday:  Mental Math:  Addition
Tuesday:  Mental Math:  Subtraction
Wednesday:  IXL (click link) Math Grade 4 A.9 & D.1 (D.1 is on-going and should be eventually completed at 100%)
Thursday:  No School Uzbekistan Independence Day
Friday:  Go outside, bounce up and down on one foot while singing your favorite song.  Play outside.  Have fun.

Deciphering and finding the kid-friendly version of our central idea!

There is a lot to learn about where food came from by just looking at the package.

"Mr. Mike, why is the 300 chart so big?"
 We're off!
Down to the basement, we go. Storage!
Is that a delivery happening? Yuppers.
Scales, smells, scowl from the smells, etc.
 Yes, that is a cooler.

From bulk (over 50 kg) manageable (around 1 kg).

Did you know that the second and third numbers on a UPC tell which country a product came from? We do!
The potatoes and onions have to go somewhere.

Food can be stored on shelves, pallets (large, flat wooden surfaces) so they can easily be moved. Cool!
Well, we do not want it to spoil. It is tricky keeping food fresh for humans to share.

Is the price by the kilogram, or piece? Arg!

How much is this please?
Why is it so hard to find something under 10,000 soum, made in Uzbekistan, has less than five ingredients, and sugar can not be the first one?!

No plastic bag please because, yeah, I brought my own!

The walk back was just another part of experiencing how humans obtain and share food. Oh, and we had some laughs, too!
