Olga, Volume 31: April 13, 2015

Olga pointing at her beautiful cup that she just made!
March break is over and we are back in full-swing! It feels like we never skipped a beat and we are excited. This week we attended a field trip to the Rakhimov Ceramic Studio to look at artifacts and how they tell us about the people that created them. What an amazing experience! Followed by a round of confirming nods and yeeeeessssss, Reagan said, "This is the best field trip I have ever been on!" It was! Students "threw" clay on the pottery wheel and got to shape a second piece of clay into their own creation. Imagination was everywhere and so was culture. We learned about how artifacts reveal the natural resources and traditions of people who not only created them, but of those who also may have an interest in or like them. Elements of the five attributes of an object - value, construction, function, design, and physical features - were found throughout our discussion of what we learned from visiting the pottery studio.

We started our growing patterns and function (algebra) unit this week. It is a quick one. Students have looked at input/output tables, found rules for them, and will be creating a poster of their own original growing pattern - complete with pictures and table that reveal rule they've created.

This month is Reading month! Check out the parent emails for more info. This week is the bookmark contest. Have your child create one at home. Paper has been given to them by Ms. Sayyora. Enjoy the warm weather, beautifully cool evenings, and the pictures from this week!
