Xiao Ya, Volume 16: December 8, 2014

We're rotting away! Haha!
We have carved a pumpkin and placed it in an enclosed glass case with soil. Using our Pumpkin Journals, we are following the scientific method to test what will happen. The culminating event will be a visit from the author of the story later this school year!

Data... it has many shapes and we represent it in so many different ways. This and next week we will continue to represent data using line plots, frequency tables, bar graphs, line graphs, and any other way students create. With this data, we will look for different patterns and averages, like the mean, median, mode, and range.

We just keep moving... as we study different map and geography skills that show the migrations of people we're reading about in UOI. This week we discussed needs and wants and how they can be different due to a situation a person may be in, like war or living in a first-world or third-world country. We will continue to explore migration books and eventually choose one to retell using Puppet Pals.

Book Clubs continue to improve as we learn how to debate and discuss our thoughts, ideas, and answers to challenging discussion questions. The Stone Fox book club group helped model how to take turns arguing and use the text to support their answers.

In writing, we will be discussing how to use dialogue and interview others. This links to our UOI study, as many migration stories are told orally and passed on from one generation to the next.

Action
Students are really reflecting and making many connections to their migration stories, people's stories around them, and in our books. When your child mentions how or why people, or family members move, this is Action because they want to know more about human migration and its connection(s) with challenges, risks, and opportunities related to this. Tell me about it, so I can add it to next week's blog! Thanks:)
