Volume 19: January 11, 2016!

Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope you rested well and enjoyed your winter break. Students are happy and excited to be back. We are already into the swing of things... To start the January/February Book Share Guidelines are now posted. Please read them carefully with your child and if you have any question, please email me.

In math, we continue our study of data and how the world is organized in mathematical ways. This includes look at what data is, how we collect it, how to analyze it, and how to evaluate it.

Our unit of inquiry is in its final stages. Students are reading through many migration stories. They will choose one and write a script that retells the story in their own words. Using images, characters, and other scenery, they will perform and record the script using Puppetpals on iPads. To enhance our scripts and build suspense and a story "arc", we will practice different elements that great writers add to their work. Such elements include, how to add important dialogue, using your senses to describe a scene, and how to add internal thoughts and feelings to develop characters. Finally, students will include a personal opinion, reaction, or action to their presentation. This will reflect how each student was connected, was impacted, and what possible real-life actions they could take in real-life. Sometimes action is an change inside a person, like how one views the world. This action is often deeper, more meaningful, and can have long-lasting change in a person. I am excited to see what actions we might have from our study of migration!

Enjoy the week!
